Puri Jaganath Ratha Yatra

The annual Puri Jaganath Ratha Yatra, also known as the Puri Chariot Festival. The festival is held at the city of Puri in the state of Odisha. Associated with the deity Jagannath (a form Vishnu or Krishna). It is one of the most important Hindu festivals, with the major celebration taking place in Puri, Odisha.

The Poori Jagannath Ratha Yatra is one of the most important festivals celebrated in India. It is a celebration of the three chariots of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra. History of Puri Jaganath Ratha Yatra

The Poori Jagannath Ratha Yatra symbolizes the journey of Lord Jagannath towards his devotees. On this day, millions of devotees come together to take part in this grand procession accompanied by music and dance performances. It believed that these chariots will carry them on their journey to Gundicha Temple located at a distance of 2 km from Puri’s main temple complex.

According to Hindu holy texts like Brahma Purana, Padma Purana etc. Subhadra, the younger sister of Lord Jagannath and Balabhadra, wished to travel to Puri where her aunt lived. To fulfill her wish, the two brothers set out for the city in chariot. Since the 1500s the people of Puri have celebrated this annual procession to commemorate the journey of the divine brothers from their father’s house to their aunt’s house.

All three chariots carrying the gods have their own name. The chariot of Lord Jagannath referred to as Nandighosh while the chariots of Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra called Taladhwaja and Darpadalana respectively.

According to a report by OdishaTV, only the affected women pulled the Devi Subhadra chariot. The three deities pulled in chariots in a procession. Known as ‘Joti Pahandi’ the day after Rath Yatra on Paripada Tuesday, known as ‘Srikhitra’ second after Puri.
